Attitude is everything.

In today's world, it sometimes feels like people are constantly fighting for our attention, with the weapons of battle being doom and gloom.

Don't believe me? Try mentioning what a great day it is to the next person you see. A very small percentage of the population will agree with you.

The rest will say something like, "Maybe now, but soon it will be bad again," or "I will be better at 5 o'clock on Friday," or, "It will be a lot better after I have my fifteenth cup of coffee."

So when you are surrounded by people vying for the title of "Crappiest Life," how on God's green earth are we, as achievers, supposed to come out at the end of the day with a great attitude, motivated to change your life and the world for the better.

Become BAD NEWS BULLETPROOF! We have to build a MENTAL FORCE FIELD that deflects and destroys the downers.

How do we do that?

Step 1: Make It A Great Day!

By "Make It A Great Day," I mean you have to have a great day, EVERY DAY, at least to the general public. When people ask how you are, you need to build a reputation for always being great. "But Mark," you say, "I can't have a great day every day. I am human." I hear you, and

unfortunately, nobody cares. At least the general public doesn't care. The truth is, the more you tell people you are great, the greater you will feel. Share your troubles with your best friend or spouse, but I would caution you to even do that sparingly. Your spouse doesn't want to hear you complain about how you always need to be happy because I told you to. Find a different outlet. Exercise is a great one.

Step 2: Practice Being A Good Finder

If you have seen the movie Kung Fu Panda, you will remember when Oogway told Shifu, "There is just news. There is no good or bad." Maybe you prefer Shakespeare, when Hamlet said, "There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." Both of these can be summed up into, "Every cloud has a silver lining." Grab a sheet of paper and write down all the bad things that happen for a week. Then, directly underneath, think of something good that comes from that event. You can literally do this with ANY event, no matter how seemingly horrific. Some may be harder to overcome than others, but the more challenging it is, the more value you will get.

Step 3: Deflect The Downers

Once you get better at turning the bad news into a silver lining, time to start fighting back. Remember what we discussed in the very beginning, when I said to talk to someone about how great the day is and listen for them to contradict you? Your turn. When people start to bring up bad situations, or gossip, or negativity, immediately turn it into a positive. One of two things will happen. Option one, you may brighten their day just a little bit, and by doing that, maybe you will spread that positivity to someone else. Option two, they will find complaining to you a lost cause and stop doing it.

The great Zig Ziglar taught a FANTASTIC lesson on this in one of his presentations. If you have a few minutes to listen, you can check it out here: Ziglar Show #424: Do You Respond or React To Life?
